Pinot Meunier
Wonderfully intense yet remarkably fine for the variety, bursting with bright strawberry and red cherry fruit. There’s joie de vivre about the Eyrie Pinot Meunier bottling, yet no hint of richness or heaviness to intrude upon the immensely moreish fruit. Just 12% abv but with great depth of fruit.
I’m very excited to have acquired a small stock of this ageless wine. A deep-coloured Pinot Meunier from a block planted in 1965, which was the first Pinot Meunier to be planted outside Champagne. Decanter described this vintage as ‘ethereal’ and awarded it 97 points. It’s a bit structural at the moment (that’s wine-speak for ‘not much fun’.) with the fruit a little bit monolithic, closed and embryonic. Stash it away for a couple years. Drink 2024-2050.
